Ömeriye Camii

One opinion says that this mosque was built during the reign of Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab or his grandson, Caliph Umar ibn Abdul Aziz. Another opinion says that both of them only built the foundation. This is one of the oldest mosques in Gaziantep. I expected this mosque to be beautiful, unfortunately it was not. The building is very ancient and looks neglected, even I was worried it would collapse. There is not enough lighting so it looks a little scary, especially since the mosque is located in a narrow alley. We only came briefly at dusk and did not pay much attention so this is all I can say. One important thing, keep an eye on your bags and belongings!! Even though this is a place of worship, theft can happen anywhere. Stay alert!!

Questa storica moschea situata nel quartiere Düğmeci di Gaziantep è la moschea più antica della città. Nei registri è riportato che fu ristrutturata nell’anno 607 dell’Egira (1210 d.C.). Non è noto con certezza chi l’abbia costruita, ma esistono diverse versioni secondo cui sarebbe stata edificata al tempo del califfo Omar (Hz. Ömer), oppure fatta costruire da Ömer Bin Abdülaziz, califfo omayyade e nipote di Hz. Ömer tramite sua figlia. Un altro nome della moschea è “Ömereyn”, che significa “i due Ömer”. Il portale monumentale e il mihrab (nicchia della preghiera) sono costruiti con pietre bianche e nere. Sui parapetti del balcone del minareto si possono osservare splendidi esempi di intaglio nella pietra. È persino possibile vedere, sul corpo del minareto, tracce di proiettili e frammenti di granata risalenti alla Difesa di Antep.
