Review of the Migration Office in Bolu
My experience with the Migration Office in Bolu was distressing and full of suffering. Like many Iraqi, Syrian, and other refugees in this city, we faced racist and disrespectful treatment. Even though our applications were approved by the UNHCR, refugee applications are systematically rejected in this city, as in many other cities across Turkey.
The Turkish police in Bolu, as in other cities, raid refugees’ homes at night, sometimes at 2 a.m. or 4 a.m., cutting off electricity and gas from the outside to force families to step out and check what happened. Refugees are then arrested at their doorsteps. These inhumane methods force refugees to live in constant fear.
On one occasion, I visited the Migration Office regarding a temporary residency matter and was treated with extreme disrespect by one of the employees. Even though I speak Turkish fluently and graduated from a Turkish university, she treated me with disdain, as if I was inferior. I spoke to her respectfully and politely, but her behavior lacked humanity and respect, making the experience painful and difficult.
We were also forced to visit the Migration Office weekly to sign documents, standing in long queues for hours in harsh weather conditions, whether in heat or cold. During these times, we were treated as less than human, and people looked at us with disdain, especially when we spoke Arabic, as if being a refugee was a crime. This suffering is something I can never forget—it was a truly harsh experience.
Additionally, refugees in Turkey are exploited in the labor market, forced to accept wages far below the minimum wage allocated to Turkish workers, without any legal protection or rights to ensure a decent life.
It’s important to highlight that this racist treatment is not limited to Bolu but is practiced throughout Turkey, making refugees’ lives incredibly difficult with no prospect of improvement.
I call on the UNHCR and all humanitarian organizations to urgently intervene to protect refugees from these tragic conditions and work to improve their situations. Turkish authorities must take action to end these policies that go against the most basic standards of human rights.
We strive to combat these racist policies through all available legal means and hope that the concerned authorities will act quickly to resolve this ongoing crisis, which has been affecting refugees and their families across the country for more than a decade.
