The only ornithological research and bird bandings station in eastern Turkey, located in the Aras River Wetlands in the Aras River valley on the Iğdır/Kars border. Riparian wetlands, floodplain lakes, steppe wetlands and riverine corridors. A premier bird migration corridor – 63% of Turkey’s 502 bird species have been recorded here. Over 110 bird species breed and over 100 bird species winter at this site. 190,000+ birds of 207 species banded, 177 birds of 23 species tracked with satellite tags or geolocators, 316 bird species recorded in total. Seasonal bird counts of Aras wetlands show that it is one of the richest bird refuges in Eurasia. Planned dams and water diversion threaten natural flooding cycles. Wetland drainage, agricultural encroachment and pollution are increasing. Unprotected. Intensive hunting and grazing add pressure. Critical corridor habitat for climate resilience and biodiversity connectivity.
Conservation Status: Urgent – the Aras Valley is globally significant for migrating and breeding birds. Conservation actions must prevent dam encroachments and restore water regimes to sustain the wetland mosaic. High priority – one of Turkey’s richest bird areas, unprotected, the richest wetland for birds in the eastern half of the country, an area the size of Germany.
